Posto Verde "Green Place" in Italian We would like to welcome you to our "green place" in the woods. Situated in the Eastern Ozark region of Missouri, in northern Washington County, Posto Verde is located in an oak-pine forest typical of the area. Mature oak trees abound, as do hickories, buckeyes, maples, dogwoods, redbuds, Eastern Red Cedars, and many more tree types. But perhaps most special of all are the stately Short Leaf Pines. The Short Leaf Pine is a cousin of the Great Lodge Pole Pine of the Pacific Northwest, and rises totem-style, sometimes 70-80 feet straight up, with few or no branches except at the top. On clear days, no matter the season, the tall pine trees surrounding us present a rich green palatte against the backdrop of a deep blue sky, giving a distinctive western feel to the surroundings. At night, they tower skyward as imposing monoliths, silhouetted against a star-filled sky. Joe is mostly Italian, and Elizabeth Scottish, so we searched to come up with a name for our place. "Posto Verde" [said Post'-o Vair'-dee] was Elizabeth's idea, and Joe (of course) agreed to the Italian name. NEWS: The main phase of work is finished on Lake Notalotawata. It is finally holding water, and we are building a minnow population now, along with establishing some pond plants to balance out the water quality. It will take a few years for things to get settled, but in the end we hope it will be a nice little pond. An additional side benefit of clearing the forest to build the lake was the explosion of fall color to some of the native trees. |
Welcome to the website for the 2011 annual "Memorial Day in the Woods" Dulcimer Event, hosted by Joe and Elizabeth DiPietri. This will be our fourth year hosting this event, and as before, everyone is welcome! This year's primary day event will be held on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, May 28, 2011, from 10 AM till ???. In 2008 , we built a detached covered pavilion shelter, which we used for jam sessions. We also made use of our extra long (50 ft x 10 ft) pickin' porch in front of our home. We've added more furniture to the pavilion and additional party lights as well. However, if you have your favorite chair, bring it along.
We set the floor with native rock flagstones, quarried from nearyby Calico Creek, and used the same agri-metal siding for the gables as on the residence, and same old-style bright galvanized "5V" barn roof. The agri-tin ceiling and stone floor make for nice accoustics and a great place to pick out tunes on the dulcimer. The pavilion has general purpose party lighting (enough to read music by) and is electrified for anyone wishing to set up a small amplifier system which they might bring.
